Basements and Attics can easily be turned into two of the most comfortable areas of your home. Comfortable meaning; the areas you want to spend the most time in with yourself and your family. These diamonds in the rough are so fantastic because they can add a third of your living space to your home without increasing the footprint at all. You can forgo all the costs associated with excavation, siding, roofing etc. It’s quite common that the basement turns into the most playful space in the house. The basement being below the main living area of the house and the attic above you don’t have to play by the rules. This is your family space. Forget entertaining, forget the status quo it’s whatever you want it to be. Entertainment room, playroom, gym room, soccer room, craft room, ice hockey. Yes, I said ice hockey. With synthetic ice, you can quickly lay down an area where you can slap on your hockey or figure skates and have a blast.
Attics can be so much fun. Even if you only have to pull down attic stairs it’s not a problem. If your home has the right layout we can find a way up and install a stairwell that fits perfectly with the flow of a home where no one would ever know that it was a remodel.
I’ll never forget the first time we ever remodeled one. The client had a pull down attic stairway where they were using the attic for miscellaneous storage at best. I mean who likes to bring storage up and down from a pull down staircase? The project started because they wanted to finish their basement and needed to shuffle all of the storage into the attic and wanted a stairwell and a nice clean space to do so. After the stairwell was installed and the project started to take shape they were amazed at the feel and functionality of the attic space. They decided to put the basement on hold and finish the attic completely which became a beautiful craft room and home office. It was amazing to look back and think this living space never existed but was always there right under their nose. Well since it was an attic I guess it was above their nose.
